Borgen is amazing. I cannot recommend it enough. Seriously, people, check it out on iPlayer if you can. It’s ten episodes, shown in double bills on BBC Four.

This is a bit of an excited ramble as I have just finished watching the first episode.

Basically, it is the thing that I wanted to see in The Killing: an examination of how events affect elections. In Forbrydelsen I, the killing of Nanna Birk Larsen had such far-reaching consequences I couldn’t see how the election would go ahead, or if it did, that the turn out would be catasrophically low.

Borgen starts three days before an election. It’s like the Danes saw into my head and made exactly the show I wanted to see.

There is a brief bit where the action is in London, which pleased me as I was wondering why the hell Denmark suddenly looked familiar.

The people in this show are adults. Mostly. Borgen’s relationship with her partner/husband (not sure which) is funny and charming and sweet.

Kasper (Nyborg’s adviser) is trying to be a proper spin doctor but has to contend with Borgen actually having principles and shit. Sadly he is also a bit of an idiot.

His ex-girlfriend is Katrine, a TV journalist who is sleeping with the prime minister’s advisor. Unfortunately for her, he dies post-shag, which leads to her calling Kasper to get her out of a hole. I have a feeling this will turn out to be a bad idea on so many levels. So many.

Lovely lovely Soren Malling is in this as a TV producer, which is great for me. I still occasionally just wail MEYER when I think about Forbrydelsen I.

There are other politicians, including a far-right bastard and an old duffer who doesn’t like the new ways of doing things. The prime minister’s wife is depressed and prone to causing embarrassing scenes, leading the PM to make a mistake that is going to cause major ructions.

I am slightly worried that Nyborg is going to have the same journey as Troels Hartmann and end up in power but tarnished.

(end of the first ep: the Moderates have won a load of seats in the elections, and Nyborg is due to become the prime minister!)
