This weekend, I started watching Fringe. But before I got to that, I decided (there was a reason, not entirely sure what it was) to rewatch The State Within, a political/espionage drama from 2006.

OMG IT WAS SO GOOD. It really held up (though I had forgotten 90% of the second half...), and the reactions I had were the same as the first time I watched it (there are basically two moments out of six episodes that annoy me, which is pretty good going). The script was great, the acting was amazing (Ben Daniels! Lennie James! Jason Isaacs! SHARON GLESS!), the plot moved along at a decent pace AND made sense (mostly). Why the writers didn’t get snapped up for Spooks, I don’t know. I need to look up some of their other stuff soon.

So that was my Friday night/Saturday morning. If you haven’t seen The State Within, I really recommend it.

I then moved on to Fringe and made it through 11 episodes by the end of the weekend, well done me. Most of my thoughts were OMG AWESOME, but a slightly more developed version below the cut:

(Please no spoilers past episode 11!)

1. OMG AWESOME
2. OMG OLIVIA. Seriously. OLIVIA DUNHAM, FUCK YEAH.
3. I’m torn between occasionally being sympathetic to Walter (because the mental health treatment has fucked him up) but mostly going OH GOD NO YOU SHOULD NOT DO THAT. And I’m not entirely sure if the show wants us to think he’s awesome or not. (like drugging Astrid, for instance)
4. Peter I actually quite like. I sympathise with him quite a lot at the moment, although given the way things have been going within the show I will probably regret this.
5. Astrid is so cute.
6. Shockingly, my favourite character (besides Olivia) is Charlie. Because he is the supportive one in the background (hi there, predictability). I also like how he’s not really involved in the Fringe stuff but he’s still working with them and backing them up and being loyal. And given that he’s my favourite, I fully expect him to be betraying them all. We shall see (I have been resisting spoilers)
7. I LOVE the worldbuilding. The bajillions of hints and mysteries and questions and non-answers. LOVE IT.
8. I love the Federal building. Is it the actual Federal building or is it like fake Thames House? It’s gorgeous, anyway.
9. I love the way the onscreen captions are done.
10. The body horror is a bit much for me at the moment, though I get that people with stronger stomachs probably don’t consider all of it body horror. BUT ICK, PEOPLE, ICK. The explodiness and stuff being implanted and injected and blood coming from everywhere and OH GOD DO NOT WANT. So that is a bit difficult at the moment. I mean, I watch Holby and Casualty but not the surgery scenes. So yeah, I’m a wimp when it comes to that.
11. The sound effects are a bit of a problem for me too – all high pitched mechanical noises, aaargh.
12. But mostly, AWESOME.

Tonight I am planning to move my bedroom around as I am fed up of hearing the guy next door and his mates talking ever so late into the evening. They were still chatting at fucking 1.30 am this morning. And earplugs don't really help. UGH.
